Many fans of Nigeria’s Super Eagles were left injured on Saturday following a stampede that marred the team’s victory over Zambia in a FIFA World Cup qualifying fixture.
The stampede was said to have occurred at the entrance of the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, capital of Akwa Ibom state where the Super Eagles played the Chipolopolo of Zambia.
There was commotion at some of the entry points of the stadium as thousands of Nigerian football lovers who had gathered at the stadium tried to enter the stadium. Some of the football fans were allegedly attacked with sticks by soldiers deployed to the venue to control the crowd.
Journalists reported seeing bloodstains around the gate of the stadium in the aftermath of the stampede while policemen and Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officials were seen standing beside some unconscious fans.
Ambulances were also seen conveying injured persons to the hospital as some fans who escaped unhurt lamented the loss of some personal effects.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Elkana Bala, assured that the stampede would be investigated and refuted claims that people died at the stadium.
“It is confirmed that nobody died. But some persons were injured while struggling to gain access into the stadium. The injured persons were taken to hospital for medical attention,” Bala said.
Punch reports that the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Charles Udoh, also said he would call his counterpart in the ministry of Health to investigate the incident.
