7 patients recover from monkeypox in Bayelsa state

Seven out of the 13 monkey pox patients on admission at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital, Okolobiri in Bayelsa have fully recovered, the state Commissioner for Information, Daniel Iworiso-Markson, has said.

The commissioner said in a statement on Wednesday in Yenagoa that the seven patients had been discharged from the hospital.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the contagious disease broke out three weeks ago in Agbura area of Yenagoa following reports that a family manifested symptoms of monkey pox after eating monkey meat.

He said the six other patients under medical surveillance at the teaching hospital were responding positively to treatment.

“The government has been able to successfully contain the spread of the disease as no new case has been reported in the last few days.

“With the way and manner government deployed its machinery and with the team of dedicated health and medical personnel, monkey pox will soon be fully kicked out of Bayelsa state,” he added.

Mr. Iworiso-Markson commended the state Ministry of Health and National Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, for their efforts in containing the disease.

The commissioner also appreciated people in the state for taking preventive measures against further spread of the disease and urged them to maintain healthy lifestyle, environmental and personal hygiene.

According to him, feedback received from various channels in the state indicates that public enlightenment campaign, especially in local languages, have succeeded in alerting people to avoid actions that would further spread the disease.

The NCDC has since reported the spread of the disease to six other states saying a total of 31 suspects cases have been identified there. There has been no reported deaths from the disease.

BREAKING: Two of Davido’s crew guys who dropped late Tagbo at the hospital have been arrested, Davido reinvited for questioning

The shocking death of Davido's friend, Tagbo is taking a new turn, as we just received a new report that two of Davido’s boys who dropped him at the hospital has been arrested.

Recall that  news of Tagbo’s death and other similar news has been trending on the internet for days, it was also reported that two of Davido’s guys, dropped Tagbo at the hospital and when he reportedly died before the nurse got to their car, they allegedly refused to give their contacts.

The Two have been arrested by the Lagos State police command, a source close to the situation told LIB exclusively.

The men, who were with Tagbo the night they were all partying to celebrate Tagbo’s birthday, were arrested today after Davido brought them himself to see the commissioner of Police in Ikeja who then ordered their arrest following preliminary investigation.

Meanwhile, acting Police Commissioner,  Imohimi Edgal stated  at a briefing on Wednesday that Davido has been re-invited for questioning.

According to Edgal, the autopsy report revealed that Tagbo died from suffocation, adding that he was abandoned in his car at the hospital by Davido’s driver and two of his friends.

Edgal said Davido has been re-invited for questioning because he lied that he only knew of Tagbo’s demise while he was at DNA night club, in Victoria Island, a claim that has been found to be untrue.

The Untold Story Of Chime Amaechi, The Third Davido Associate Who Died Last Week

I was in a meeting upstairs when our TV producer, Joan Omionawele called me on the phone. Strange, because she knew I was engaged at the moment. I didn’t pick up. She called twice again and I was immediately suspicious. What’s going on in the newsroom?

I didn’t have to wonder for long: she came to the office where I was meeting and crashed it. ‘Sorry Jide, but there’s something really important you need to know.’ I excused myself from the meeting and walked with her. Then she told me Chime Amaechi‘s family members were here. Chime who? ‘Chime now. The other guy that died with Davido’s DJ in Banana Island.’ ‘Oh shoot!’ I said. That’s important.

Here’s why it was important: even I had wondered who Chime was. It seemed like his death, compared to Tagbo‘s – which Caroline Danjuma made a big fuss about – and DJ Olu’s – who got a lot of media coverage probably because of his billionaire father – did not interest anybody. Apart from the Punch report earlier in the day that claimed ‘hard drugs’ were recovered from the death scene, not much was being said about the ‘third Davido associate’.

As we went upstairs to the lounge where they were waiting, I could hear a man’s voice saying ‘No no, nothing like that. I’m surprised myself. My son was not a drug user.’ We got in and I saw a family huddled together in silence: father folded his arms across his chest, the sisters glancing at their phones and shaking their heads intermittently. The scene looked like gloomy French pantomime.

‘Good afternoon sir…’ I began tentatively. How does one comfort a parent whose child had just died? Plus I’m not their friend or a family member: I’m a newsman who wants to get the story from them; how does one do that without coming across as insincere? They responded quite well and I told them what we wanted from them: just to share their story. Is that fine with you? Father said yes and stood up. Let’s go he said, as we all made our way back to the studio.

Who was Chime?'

Up on till this moment, the most that had been said about the Chime was that ‘he died with DJ Olu’, as though he was inconsequential. And that’s how it sometimes happens, when a less popular individual dies in company of famous people. When Princess Diana died, the whole world stood still. Even her boyfriend Dodi El-Fayed was less talked about than she – and the third casualty of the night, Henri Paul, is rarely mentioned, as though he was a postscript to the tragedy.

In the same vein, Chime Amaechi got lost in the ‘Davido’s friend’ chatter. But who was he, how did he get involved in this macabre story?

‘He was a good son’, his father began. ‘He wasn’t a riffraff that was hanging around Davido looking for handouts…no, no. He and Olu Abiodun were childhood friends in Ibadan.

‘They met in primary school. They attended Oritamefa Baptist School. If you know that school, you’ll agree with me that it wasn’t an ‘anyhow’ school. It’s a private school with modern facilities and that’s where he and Olu met. He used to play drums, very talented. He used to play drums in the choir and that’s where his love for music started. It was where the two of them first became friends…’

Mr. Amaechi is a real estate surveyor and valuer in Ibadan, possibly the second thriving metropolis in south-west Nigeria, after Lagos. He may have earned a decent living enough to send his children to quality schools, but he was no Dapo Abiodun – billionaire oil magnate and politician – nor for that matter, Adedeji Adeleke.

Soon as it often happens with childhood friends, life does what it does: Olu was sent off to the UK to continue his studies while Chime remained in Ibadan. In time, he got admitted to the University of Lagos and attempted to get a university degree. It wasn’t to be.

Second HKN Death In A Week

He and Olu would later reunite on social media and rekindle their friendship. By this time Olu had met Davido and was getting involved in the music as official DJ. On one of his trips back home, he and Chime decided to do business: Olu was an oil firm heir and had access to small, but very profitable ventures. ‘Olu’s father owns Heyden Petroleum and he with Chime used to transport petroleum products, in thousands of litres, across the whole country,’ Chime’s sister Sopulu said. ‘They also had real estate that they were marketing and getting commissions from. Even last week, he still sent me pictures of a parcel of land to market in Ibadan,’ her father added.

Soon Chime started seeing more than his dear father and dropped out of school all together. ‘When I advised him as a father to go back to school, he told me that people that graduated are not making the type of money he was so what’s the point?’

And really what was the point of slaving away in class? The elderly man may not get it but Chime was living every young man’s dream: he shared a flat with Olu in Banana Island, money was flowing in steadily and his celebrity connection was on point. To put it into perspective: he was only 23 years old on his last birthday in February. He’s been living the good life since he was 19. School for what?

Death at Banana Island

‘We were at home in Ibadan, when a family friend who does not normally call came to the house with his wife. They said Chime was in an accident and we should pack our bags and come with them to Lagos. It was very strange to me and I wondered what was going on,’
Mr. Amaechi said.

It was early on Sunday morning and they were getting ready to go to church. About that time, some friends had seen reports of it online and had called his sister. ‘I noticed someone else who I don’t talk to often called and when I picked all he was saying was ‘Oh my God, oh my God’.’

It didn’t take much longer to realize that Chime was dead. The family made their way to the morgue and Lagos State University Teaching Hospital in Ikeja.

His father went in there and looked at the body. ‘I went inside. He’s my son. I went to look at him. He was still bleeding fresh blood from his nose and foaming at the mouth. It looked as if it just happened.’

No parent should have to recall looking at their child’s corpse. As Chime’s father spoke, he masked his pain bravely; a trait that his daughter, Sopulu, must have also picked up. Neither of them shed into tears as they spoke to us, their voices only trailing off for a few seconds at intervals. The rest of the family sobbed quietly in the corner, trying to be strong in public but failing at it.

However, the family is convinced that this was no ordinary death, or an overdose as reported in the media. Sopulu in particular is insistent that they were murdered.

‘First, nobody is talking about the fact that they went to eat somewhere before heading home. Someone put the video on his Snapchat and was zooming in and out of his food. That was unlike Chime. He was usually not one to show the surroundings of where he was at any given time. But on this occasion someone was recording him. Few minutes later the video was deleted, it wasn’t left there for the normal 24 hours.’

Could he have overdosed on drugs, like initial reports had it? They disagreed vehemently. ‘My son was not a drug user,’ his father said. ‘He doesn’t even drink and if he did, it was just a little. He was the one always telling his friends not to drink or smoke. For anyone to claim that he overdosed on drugs is malicious.’

It had been reported in the media, based on a Punch coverage, that police found ‘hard drugs’ in the BMW where Olu and Chime had died. ‘Then they should tell us what hard drugs they found. The drugs would have a name. Besides, can two persons overdose at the same time on the same thing and die exactly the same way? It doesn’t add up.’

Again, one would not expect that grieving parents would agree that it was a possibility that their child used drugs. After all, he was young and considerably successful. As we’ve seen in successful people all across the world, drugs didn’t have to be big deal that they couldn’t get if they wanted. Like Lamar Odom said about his wife, Khloe Kardashian, not knowing of his drug addiction when they were married, ‘I had money in my pocket; I could score when I wanted.’ Perhaps an autopsy would give them closure – Chime’s death could have been as a result of an overdose.

His father and sister would have none of that. Sopulu is of the opinion that whoever killed her brother was responsible for the dirt being thrown on his name posthumously. ‘They should show us the footage from their house. Someone who saw it said when Olu and Chime parked, a hooded figure came to drop something in their car. That person is unknown.’

Her father thinks so too. ‘Already I’m skeptical of the autopsy. These substances could have been introduced to them later, given this strange individual that was said to drop something in the car. If the autopsy comes back and they say there was drugs in his system, I would be shocked but I won’t be surprised. I’m very skeptical.’

But we were not satisfied. The report the family gave of Chime was of a nice, easygoing, gentle soul. Why would anyone then want to murder him? Could it be blow-back from the unresolved Tagbo death few days earlier which Davido had been accused of being complicit in? Were Olu and Tagbo killed to prevent them from talking about Tagbo’s death?

The Davido Connection

Chime’s family disagrees. They don’t think the singer was involved at all. They think it’s one of the unfair media coverage they’ve received. His father told us that the friends had been distancing themselves from music to focus on ‘real business’.

‘If you look well, you’ll see that Olu was referred to as ‘former DJ to Davido.’ Olu’s father was already positioning him for real, big time business. Chime had little to do with the music anyway. He was just part of the bigger group as Olu’s friend. It’s not correct to include Davido in this matter.’

‘Besides,’ his daughter interjects, ‘Chime and Olu were not even around when Tagbo died. They were in Ibadan. That Monday they came to conclude a deal they were doing with the Oyo State government so that had nothing to do with them. I feel this was related to their business, not Davido. Somebody wanted to take out Olu and Chime was just unfortunate to be his guardian angel. He died because he was always close to his friend.’

‘We just want justice to be done,’ her father continued. ‘As a Christian, I had accepted my fate but when I saw the reports in the media; not even the blogs this time, but Punch- I had to speak out. My son was never, never a drug user.’

As the interview wrapped up, father and child stood up, blinking at the studio light. We thanked them for sharing their story with us. They thanked us for having them. Mr. Amaechi shook hands with me and once again, I expressed my condolences. ‘It’s okay,’ he said resignedly, ‘it’s okay…’

But it’s not.

They may never find the answers, or if they do, they may never accept the answers. The death of a child is never an easy thing to swallow and most parents never recover from the shock, the grief, the guilt. As they believe that Chime was Olu’s ‘guardian angel’, the questions will always tug at their minds: what if they had never met? What if their friendship had ended when Olu left for Middlesex University? What if Chime had stayed in school himself? A thousand and one ‘what-ifs’ and they may never find an answer.

SERMON: Kingdom Work And Diligence Lead To Great Success [Must Read]

Do you desire great and enduring success? If so, there are things you need to do to experience it. Everyone wants to succeed in life, but to what level you succeed depends on what you put into it. This post emphasizes the place of kingdom work and diligence in the pursuit of great success.

But Jesus answered them, “My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.” – John 5:17 (NKJV).

Then the LORD appeared to him and said: “Do not go down to Egypt; live in the land of which I shall tell you. Dwell in this land, and I will be with you and bless you; for to you and your descendants I give all these lands, and I will perform the oath which I swore to Abraham your father.” Then Isaac sowed in that land, and reaped in the same year a hundredfold; and the LORD blessed him – Genesis 26:2-3, 12 (NKJV).

God desires great success for His children (3 John 2). However, what they do towards its fulfillment determines whether or when it will come to pass in their lives. A wise man said that if you do nothing, you get nothing. It will never rain roses: when we want to have more roses, we must plant more roses. – George Eliot.

Supernatural success is a function of obedience to God and diligence. Obedience to God’s instructions provokes His interventions on your behalf and causes Him to prosper the works of your hands (Deuteronomy 30:8-9). In addition, diligence will cause you to stand before kings, enforcing your great success.

One of God’s instruction which will fast track your efforts when you obey it is, “seeking God’s kingdom and His righteousness first” (Matthew 6:33). This means seeking what pleases God at all times, which includes giving yourself to prayer and the ministry of the word (Acts 6:4), living like Jesus and soul winning (Mark 16:15, 20). Doing what pleases the Lord will move Him to do what pleases you (Deuteronomy 28:1-2).

However, if you desire great success then you need to add diligence to your obedience. The quality of the effort you put in will determine the result you will get when God prospers you. When you put in little, you get a little more; put in much, then you get much more (2 Corinthians 9:6).

Our Lord Jesus came to reconcile all to God and He worked day and night almost. He preached and taught in the day time and prayed in the night. He testified in John 5:17, that just like God, the Father, is still working, He also is working. Today, He has great success: for out of 12 disciples, He has reconciled multitudes to God, and many more will still return to God before the end of the world. So, He not only pleased the Father (John 8:29), He also worked diligently to achieve this exceeding great level of success.

Furthermore, no matter the promise you may have received from God for obeying Him, you need to diligently pursue it (Habakkuk 2:2); otherwise, it will remain a dream. For instance in Genesis 26:1-17, during a time of famine, God asked Isaac to remain in Gerar and He would bless him. Isaac obeyed and remained in the land. But he didn’t fold his hands doing nothing, while expecting God to fulfill His word. He sowed in that land and reaped hundred times what he sowed in the same year. God so blessed his diligent hands that he became very wealthy to the point of being envied by the Philistines.

In conclusion, always remember that hard work doesn’t kill, rather it pays well. Seek to please God in all things, including praying kingdom prayers, soul winning and ensuring that you work very hard, and you will enjoy great and enduring success.

Jesus is Lord!

Grace and peace of God be unto you.

6 nurses raped by thugs during night shift

Six female nurses were reportedly raped by suspected thugs on Sunday, September 24, 2017. The men were said to have stormed the hospital carrying cutlasses and axes.

A source who spoke to newsmen said a suspected thug had earlier tried calling one of the nurses several times but she did not pick her calls, so he instead showed up at the hospital.

The thug got there but was still ignored by the nurse an act that angered him and made him call other thugs to the hospital. The guys came with dangerous weapons around 11pm.

“After forcefully having their carnal knowledge, the thugs raided the hospital. They dispossessed patients their money and phones including those of the nurses,” the source added.
While some linked the incident to the incessant clashes between cultists in the area, credible sources close to the State Criminal Investigation Burea (SCIB) confirmed the arrest of some suspects already in connection with the clashes

The cathedrals we build are with money from corruption, not tithes and offerings – Pastor Yomi Kasali

I believe everyone is entitled to their opinion, that is why Reverend Yomi Kasali, founder/overseer of Foundation of Truth Ministry, Lagos while preaching in church recently said  the cathedrals being built by most churches today is with corruption loot and not with tithe and offerings.

Kasali said the biggest religion in Nigeria today is corruption and that when most corrupt people, like governors, gather, they also offer opening prayers to God.

Five arrested in Delhi over assault on a Nigerian

Police in the Indian capital Delhi have arrested five people after a video circulated showing what appears to be a mob severely beating a Nigerian man.

They have also detained the Nigerian, whom some residents accused of theft. The video shows four or five men using sticks to beat a man of African appearance who has been tied to a post.

There was a spate of attacks on African nationals living in India last year, including one in which a Congolese man was beaten to death in Delhi. Police said the latest incident happened on 24 September, and the Nigerian victim was also arrested due to a theft allegation.

A resident of the Savitri Nagar neighbourhood claimed the man broke into his house and tried to steal valuables from his room, police said.

"It is a case of attempted burglary. Those living in the house got alerted. They caught him and beat him up," Dependra Pathak, chief spokesperson of the Delhi Police told the Press Trust of India news agency.

In March, five Nigerian students were attacked by crowds, while another was beaten by a mob inside a shopping mall living in Noida, near Delhi.

Six months ago, African ambassadors in India criticised the government for not doing enough to stop a string of alleged racist attacks on Africans in Delhi.

Lady Gaga defends young girl from bullies in video message

Lady Gaga wants to put an end to bullying. The singer even created a nonprofit called the Born This Way Foundation to pursue this mission.

On Friday, she took another step in her efforts. Gaga posted a video message on Instagram addressed to the students at El Marino Elementary School in Culver City, California on behalf of her friend’s daughter, Venice.

Venice’s mom is beauty therapist Joomee Song, who works with Gaga. “Hi everybody at El Marino Elementary. This is Lady Gaga. I’m friends with Venice, and I work with Venice’s mommy, Joomee,” the singer said in her video message. “I’m really, really sad to hear that Venice is being bullied at school.”

Gaga noted that she does a lot of anti-bullying work and knows that bullying “can really change the growth and the happiness of children all over the world.”

Said the singer, “So I encourage you all to be kind to one another and to search within your community for bravery. Sometimes it’s hard to stand up against the popular kids, you know, and hang out with someone that’s being bullied. But be the bigger person. Be kinder. Be braver. Go and sit with Venice and have lunch. Be a rebel.”

The Instagram video has been viewed more than 1.5 million times. El Marino Elementary School did not immediately respond to HuffPost’s request for comment, but the school is part of Culver City Unified School District, which has an anti-bullying task force dedicated to Gaga’s same mission.

Indeed, as the singer wrote in the caption, “No child should have to sit alone at lunch or constantly be outcast. Let’s empower each other to be kinder and braver.”

Messi hat-trick sends Argentina to World Cup

A Lionel Messi hat-trick ensured Argentina came from behind to win in Ecuador and avoid missing a World Cup finals for the first time since 1970.

The 2014 runners up began the day sixth in the group and needing a top-four place to qualify automatically.

They made a terrible start in Quito, losing a goal inside 38 seconds, but fought back with Messi to the fore.

"Luckily the nationality of the best player in the world is Argentinian," said coach Jorge Sampaoli.

"We must be sure everything does not depend on Leo [Messi] but today he brought his great ability.

"I told the group: Messi did not owe the World Cup to Argentina, but football owed the World Cup to Messi. We should help him be in the World Cup."

The Barcelona forward equalised in the high-altitude Ecuadorian capital after 12 minutes when he linked up with Paris St-Germain midfielder Angel di Maria and stabbed home.

The five-time world player of the year's second goal came eight minutes later with a powerful strike from the edge of the area before a fine solo goal in the second half sealed the victory and Argentina's passage to Russia.

However, Chile - the winners of the last two Copa America titles - are out after losing 3-0 in Brazil.

Brazil had already qualified and Luis Suarez scored twice as Uruguay beat Bolivia 4-2 to qualify, with Colombia also advancing after a 1-1 draw in Peru.

Peru finished fifth in South American qualifying and will now meet New Zealand in a two-legged play-off.

Driver remanded for sexually abusing house help

Kwasi Akuffo, a 56 year old driver, on Monday appeared before an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly impregnating his 15 year old house help.

Akuffo, charged with defilement, has pleaded guilty with explanation.

He is said to have continuously defiled the victim after she had delivered. The victim got pregnant during the initial sexual advances from Akuffo.

The court presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandoh deferred Akuffo’s sentence to October 23 to enable the prosecution to ascertain the age of the victim. Akuffo has therefore been remanded into Police custody.

Chief Inspector Kofi Atimbire narrated that the complainant is a Social Worker with Adenta Welfare Department, whilst the victim is a school dropout residing at Adenta New Legon in Accra.

According to prosecution, Akuffo resides in the same house with the victim and his wife. Eight years ago Akuffo‘s wife brought the victim to stay with them at Haatso to assist them with house chores.

In 2013 Akuffo, his wife and the victim relocated to Adenta New Legon where Akuffo’s wife engaged in soap making business.

During the month of April last year, at about 0900 hours whilst Akuffo’s wife was away, Akuffo took advantage of the victim and had sex with her.

Unfortunately, prosecution said the victim got pregnant. After delivery, Akuffo’s wife took the victim to Dodowa Government Hospital where she undertook Family Planning Method to enable her continue with her education.

Prosecution said investigations have revealed that Akuffo continue to have sex with the victim after delivery.

The victim who could not bear the situation any more reported the matter to the Domestic Violence and Victim’s Support Unit at Adenta and a Social Worker was assigned to the case.

The Police also issued a medical form to the victim to seek medical attention, Chief Inspector Atimbire added.

Wanted Man: I’ll turn myself in if police get 1000 Facebook shares

A wanted man wanted something in return for turning himself in: 1,000 Facebook shares.

The Detroit-area man, who calls himself “Champagne Torino” on Facebook made the challenge on Friday to the Redford Township Police Dept.

It came after Torino left a message that some (well, most) people might construe as negative on a post regarding a home invasion.

The person manning the department’s Facebook page threatened to ban Torino from the page.

Since Torino already has several arrest warrants against him, it’s a wonder he was on the page at all. It’s unclear what his arrest warrants are for.

Still, the threat of a ban sparked his competitive nature. He promised to turn himself in if the department’s next post got 1,000 shares. He also sweetened the deal by promising to come with a dozen doughnuts and to pick up every piece of litter around local schools.

The department happily accepted the challenge, joking that the doughnuts were the key element:

“Donuts!!!! He promised us donuts! You know how much we love Donuts! Help us win this challenge and clean up blght in Redford at the same time! It’s as easy as a SHARE of this post.”

Within an hour the post had more than the 1,000 shares, Torino demanded. Since Friday, it’s been shared more than 4,200 times.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Torino had yet to show up at the police department with doughnuts in hand, a department official told HuffPost.

Officers tried to be philosophical about it on a post, explaining that “everyone gets caught at some point.”

Eminem Destroys Donald Trump In His BET Cypher

Earlier today, DJ Khaled revealed that Eminem would be returning the scene with a cypher on Tuesday night’s airing of the 2017 BET Hip Hop Awards. Following this news, anticipation instantly skyrocketed amongst fans as they were eager to hear what the Detroit legend had in stored for us, and he definitely didn’t disappoint.

Being the only rapper to go acapella, Em decided to use his platform to blast President Donald Trump, and that he did well. Addressing everything from the NFL protest & Puerto Rico to the border wall & racism, Eminem delivers a ferocious, 4-minute freestyle that any anti-Trump supporter will appreciate.

“But we better give Obama props, ’cause what we got in office now is a kamikaze that’ll probably cause a nuclear holocaust/And while the drama pops, and he waits for shit to quiet down/He’ll just gas his plane up and fly around until the bombing stops," Eminem rapped. "Intensity’s heightened, tensions are rising/Trump, when it comes to giving a shit, you’re as stingy as I am/Except when it comes to having the balls to go against me, you hide ’em/’Cause you don't got the fuckin’ nuts, like an empty asylum.”

Eminem also had a little message for any one of his fans who supported Donald Trump as well. "Any fan of mine who’s a supporter of his, I’m drawing in the sand a line: You’re either for or against/And if you can’t decide who you like more and you’re split on who you should stand beside, I’ll do it for you with this: Fuck you,” he spits.

In addition to all that, Em also referenced Colin Kaepernick, the white supremacist march in Charlottesville, and Trump's feud with Senator John McCain to name a few. It's safe to say he definitely had a lot to get off his chest Tuesday night.

This cypher from Eminem comes on the heels of rumors that Em has a new album on the way for us. In fact, rumors are swirling that we might be getting it on November 17th, but we’ll have to wait to confirm that at a later date. But the fact that Eminem even did this cypher should indicate that he's prepping his comeback soon. So stay tuned.

Check out Eminem’s freestyle/cypher (below) and let us know what you think!

Nigerian Army to kick off operation ‘Crocodile Smile II’ this Friday to complement Operation python dance

The Nigerian Army Tuesday said its planned launch of Operation Crocodile Smile II is aimed at confronting militancy, kidnapping and oil bunkering in the Niger Delta and parts of the South-west region.

The commencement of the operation slated for Friday is coming amid criticisms from Niger Delta youths along other groups in the oil rich region.

The army also stressed that the operation would go a long way to complement Operation Python Dance also known as Operation Egwu Eke II in the South-east, ThisDay reports.

According to the Director of Army Public Relations, Brig. Gen. Sani Usman, “the Nigerian Army is set to flag off Exercise Crocodile Smile II on Friday, October, 13, 2017.

The exercise, set to span across 3 Divisions of the Nigerian Army (2, 6 and 81 Divisions), is in line with the 2017 Training Directives which aims at training troops in the conduct of internal security operations in aid of civil authorities across the various formations’ areas of responsibilities, based on constitutional provisions.

“It will be recalled that last year, between November and December 2016, Exercise Crocodile smile I was conducted within the Niger Delta states to curtail prevailing security challenges then.

These challenges include illegal oil bunkering, pipeline vandalism, kidnapping and militancy amongst others. Exercise Crocodile Smile II is specifically designed to further the gains and consolidate on the successes of Exercise Crocodile Smile I.”

He added that “with the operationalisation of 6 Division Nigerian Army, earlier in the year, the need to exercise troops in an amphibious environment makes it expedient to hold Exercise Crocodile smile II.

Moreover, this exercise will complement the on-going Exercise Egwu Eke II in the South-Eastern part of the country.

“Let us not be quick to forget the scenario in which these exercises are carried out. Egwu Eke II became expedient due to the mindless assassinations (even in religious places), attack on security personnel, theft of weapons, armed banditry, kidnapping and cultism, among other security challenges.

“In a similar vein, security challenges in the South-eest and Niger Delta geo-political regions such as illegal oil bunkering, pipeline vandalism, cultism, kidnapping, militancy and other challenges are becoming rampant.”

Usman said: “The need for troops to sharpen their skills to cope with these security challenges within the 2, 6 and 81 Divisions’ Area of Responsibilities calls for the conduct of Exercise Crocodile Smile II.
“Also, in actualising the Chief of Army Staff’s vision, which is to ‘To have a Professionally Responsive Nigerian Army in the Discharge of its Constitutional Roles’, accentuates the call for the conduct of this exercise in conjunction with sister services and other security agencies.

“This exercise will therefore be conducted with the involvement of other security agencies such as the Nigerian Police and Nigeria Security, Department of State Services, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Nigeria Customs Service and National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, just to mention a few.”

The director maintained thay “Exercise Crocodile Smile II is also conceptualized to leverage on real time intelligence to curtail insecurity, thereby fulfilling both training and operational objectives.

“Accordingly, Exercise Headquarters would be established in the field to facilitate open communication between members of the public and exercising troops.

“Emphasis will be placed on raids, cordon and search operations, anti-kidnapping drills, road blocks, check points and other amphibious operations. Community support activities such as medical outreaches will also feature prominently during the exercise.

“In this regard, members of the public are enjoined not to panic on seeing the movement of military equipment and troops to staging areas as their safety and well-being is guaranteed at all times.

“The public is also requested to remain vigilant, security conscious and report suspected criminals who will likely flee the military exercise areas to find safe haven among communities,” Usman stressed.

Examination malpractice: ‘Students now drug invigilators with dangerous chemicals’ – WAEC

The West African Examinations Council, WAEC, has decried the rate of examination malpractice among students, adding that students now drug invigilators using dangerous chemicals.

The council’s Registrar, Dr. Iyi Uwadiae, who stated this, yesterday, during a press briefing at WAEC International Centre, Lagos, proposed international summit on examination malpractices for October 19 and 20.

He berated the dimension examination malpractices were taking on the continent of Africa and particularly in Nigeria.

He said: “In some cases, and particularly during private examinations, candidates now go to centres fully armed with guns and other weapons. For the public examinations, there are centres, and especially private schools, where invigilators are drugged to pave way for them to engage in exam malpractices.”
