Tension as herdsmen kill 52-yr-old farmer in Edo

A 52-year-old farmer, Mr. Efeosa Omoregie, was, weekend, killed by herdsmen in Oben, Orhiomwon Local Government Area of Edo State. The late Omoregie was killed on his farm by the herdsmen, who invaded it and destroyed crops and other farm produce in the process.

The killing has generated tension as youths in the community are spoiling for a reprisal attack. The victim’s 80-year-old mother, Mrs Cecilia Omoregie, and some elders of the community who spoke with journalists, lamented the killing of their son, saying his death has brought to three the number of persons killed by herdsmen recently.

However, some elders of the community were appealing to the youths not to take laws into their hands, just as policemen drafted from Iguelaba Police Station and another contingent from Benin were seen patrolling the nooks and crannies of the community to forestall the breakdown of law and law.

Some of the community’s elders told journalists on condition of anonymity that Efosa Omoregie was the third person to be killed by the herdsmen, saying the corpse of one of them had not been recovered till date.

They explained that several representations made by the community to the state and Federal governments over the activities of the herdsmen in their farmlands had remained unattended to.

They appealed to the government to do something about the ravaging activities of the herdsmen before it is too late, as they will no longer tolerate the continuous killings and raping of their women. Attempts by Vanguard speak with Edo State Police image-maker, Mr. Moses Nkombe, were unsuccessful.
