It was an unending story of woes yesterday, when 121 Nigerians deported from Libya arrived at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos.
The deportees comprising 57 male adults, two male children and a male infant including 61 female adults, two of who were pregnant, arrived Lagos, at about 5:30 pm in nouvelair flight with Registration number TS-INA and SA320 and were received by officials of National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, led by Zonal Coordinator South-west, Suleiman Yakubu.
They arrived Nigeria through the assistance of the International Organisation for Migration, IOM, after they individually expressed interest to voluntarily return to Nigeria.
Yakubu while receiving them on behalf of the Federal Government said they should learn from the unpleasant experiences in the course of their sojourn in Libya and turn a new leaf henceforth.
One of the returnees, Owoade Omolara, who hails from Apomu, Osun State, claimed that she spent 14 months working as a cleaner in a hospital and when it was time for her to be paid, she was accused of stealing and taken to prison where IOM came to her rescue.
She said many Nigerians are suffering similar fate in Libya. Another returnee, Iyabo Abiola, from Oyo State, lamented falling victim to the deceit of a trafficker who promised her a $4,000 per month job. She vowed to expose the trafficker known as Burger.
Other agencies represented at yesterday’s reception were National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP and Nigeria Police Force among others.
