It is very unlikely that the 9 year old Eno Bassey has ever heard of the word “Trafficking” before. She was not even educated past primary one before, when two months ago, a woman came to her mother‘s house in Calabar and asked that she should be allowed to live with her in Lagos. Going to Lagos was Eno’s dream, so she was very happy when the woman came.
In May, 2013, after discussing with the mother, she left with her madam. Mrs Nkeze Iroakazi, the fair looking madam promised to enrol Eno in school as soon as they got to Lagos.
According to a source, Eno almost lost her life in the hands of the madam. She poured kerosene on her and set her on fire. In an interview with one of their neighbour, she said they heard Eno shouting
“Water! Water! Water! Please! Please! Please!” She was on fire from her head to her toe, she ran out of the house shouting “Madam has killed me”. So they rushed out, and helped her quench the fire, and rushed her to the hospital.
She is currently in the Burns unit of Gbagada hospital, Lagos state. Eno’s body is heavily bandaged, from her neck to her toes. The only part that seems not to have being damaged is her head and neck.
“She sustained 95 percent third degree burns”, medical personnel who was in charge of her said.
