Facebook is rolling out a feature which allows multiple users to contribute to the same album.
Currently, only the creator of an album can add a maximum of 1,000 photos, but under the changes, up to 50 contributors can add 200 photos each to the same collection – a limit of 10,000 pictures.
“Hundreds of millions of photos are uploaded onto Facebook each day and today, we’re making it even easier for friends to share photos with the rollout of shared photo albums,” the company said in a statement.
“Whether you’re at a wedding, birthday party, or fresh off of a trip, all your friends will be able to add photos, tag photos and edit just one album.”
The new feature began rolling out on Monday in the US and will arrive in the rest of the world in the coming months, Facebook said.
The new shared albums will have privacy settings of public, friends of contributors and contributors only.
Bob Baldwin, a software engineer at Facebook who oversaw the changes, told technology website mashable.com the new settings would give the album’s creator greater control over who could see the images.
“Right now, if you were at a party and there were three different albums created, you might not be able to see all the photos [based on privacy settings], which is kind of confusing and frustrating,” he said.
He added: “I think one thing that’s really fun about creating products at Facebook is that you’re never quite sure how people will use the product in the end.
“We’re really excited for its launch because we think people will use it [shared albums] in ways that we’re not even thinking of.”
