University Receives Backlash for Suggesting Masturbation Can Prevent Sexual Assault

A university has faced serious backlash for claiming masturbation can prevent sexual assault.

ABC News reports that, Rochester Institute of Technology recently held a seminar for incoming Freshman students, that ultimately suggested that masturbation is a deterrent for sexually assaulting someone.

The slide show used the lovable character "Roo" from the child series "Winnie the Pooh" as imagery for their new acronym.

According to the presentation, R.O.O. stands for “Rub One Out." On the same slide in a closed caption font, the presentation read: “Self-gratification can prevent sexual assault”

While the school’s president has apologized for offending anyone, director of RIT’s Center for Women and Gender, Darci Lane-Williams, said:

“At no point did we say that masturbation is a deterrent to rape,” Lane-Williams said. “We were talking about situations in which someone may want to do something sexually, and their partner withdraws consent and what options they have if they find themselves sexually frustrated once they leave.”
