Hypertension: The Silent Killer

THE SILENT KILLER

Mama Emeka, my childhood neighbour collapsed while going to her store. We all thought it’s a product of her many enemies, since she was a known trouble maker earning her the alias ‘Trouble’. Emeka her son became an orphan and a drop-out as there was nobody to support him. Mama Emeka was said to be healthy that morning before her death which begs the question, what could have gone wrong. The only plausible explanation was that she must have died from complications of a chronic medical condition with hypertension being the prime suspect. Complicated hypertension kills silently and suddenly.

Hypertension simply means abnormal elevated blood pressure. Blood pressure readings are comprised of two values: one for systolic blood pressure and the other one for diastolic blood pressure; anything equal to or above 140 over 90 is considered high. It affects approximately 1 billion people worldwide and it is commoner among blacks. Studies shows that about 30 million Nigerians are hypertensive, affecting 1 in 3 men and 1 in 4 women. Unfortunately over 30% of hypertensives are unaware. These sets of people are time bomb waiting to explode just like Mama Emeka. Kaboom! And they are gone 6 feet under the ground.

Over 90% of hypertension is idiopathic, the causes are unknown. However, there are some things that increase one’s chance of having hypertension which include advance age, black race, stress, sedentary lifestyles, alcohol consumption, smoking, consumption of fatty food and extra large people with BMI greater than 30.

High blood pressure is usually asymptomatic, but when it presents with symptoms, the symptoms are usually vague. Vague symptoms of hypertension include headache, insomnia, blurry vision and palpitations. Untreated or poorly treated hypertension leads to heart failure, heart attack, stroke, blindness, renal failure and many more.

Routine blood pressure check is important(especially for individuals with increased chances) and this can be done in the hospital. One must know his number and it is easier these days that even mushroom ‘chemists’ now render blood pressure checking service at a cheap price. A way of showing love to your old ones is to make sure they get their blood pressure checked. You might be saving a life. To those who have been diagnosed of hypertension, yet you are not on drug and not attending clinic, I feel sorry for the loved ones you’ll be living behind. Stroke might just be knocking on the door. Please retrace your steps.

Eat healthy, avoid excessive salt intake and limit alcohol consumption. Extra large ones should emulate the popular comedienne Lepacious Bose. Hit the gym with the aim of maintaining a healthy weight. Who fatness don epp except for bullies?

We must all know our numbers, mine is 110/70mmHg. What is yours?

ExxonMobil Qua-Iboe Terminal Shut Down Over Militants' Threats

Nigeria is losing about N2.79 billion daily following the closure of ExxonMobil operated Qua Iboe terminal, whose workers were evacuated yesterday. Qua Iboe is Nigeria’s largest crude oil stream and exports usually more than 300,000 barrels per day.

At the current oil price of $47 per barrel, the country is bound to lose billions of Naira daily.

A market source said the evacuation was caused by the threat from militants and that tanks had been emptied of crude. Exxon did not immediately respond to a request for comment. However, the management of Exxon Mobil, yesterday said production was ongoing at Qua Iboe crude oil terminal, despite criminal activity that obstructed staff access to a bridge leading to the terminal in the early hours of yesterday.

Exxon Mobil cut Qua Iboe production and declared force majeure on exports last Friday, after a drilling rig, experiencing mechanical difficulties, damaged the pipeline it jointly owns with the state-owned Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Production was ramped up again earlier this week.

The business plan of the country to export about 800,000 barrels per day Bonny Light and Qua Iboe grade in May and June have already been hampered. This is the third time facilities of international oil companies would be attacked by the Niger Delta militants in three months.

Earlier last week, Chevron Nigeria Limited’s Okan offshore facility was shut-in. Nigerian Navy spokesperson, Commodore Chris Ezekobe, who also confirmed the incident, said the attack occurred about 40 nautical miles from the Escravos terminal, around Warri in Delta State. A group known as the Niger Delta Avengers had claimed responsibility for the attack.

The same group said it carried out an attack on a Shell Oil pipeline in February which shut down the 250,000 barrel-a-day Forcados export terminal.

Also last Saturday, Shell  evacuated  98 key personnel on board by helicopters from Eja OML 79, where production of 90,000 barrels of oil per day has been halted. Sources said a small group of staff has been left on the platform to carry out skeletal operations. The staff and facility are offered protection by two gunboats belonging to the military Joint Taskforce of the Federal Government.

Close to Eja 79 is the Bonga Field, which has a larger production capacity and is operated by another Shell subsidiary, Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCO).

I Want To Be Like Aliko Dangote, Jay Z’ – African China On Why He Opened Barbing Salon

Dance Hall artiste, Chinagorom Onuoha, better known as African China, who recently opened a unisex salon in Festac, Lagos, says the reason behind the new business, is to take his place among moguls like businessman Aliko Dangote and American rapper Jay Z.
i-want-to-be-like-aliko-dangote-jay-z-–-african-china-on-why-he-opened-barbing-salon
The singer noted that he had done his research before deciding to embrace the initiative after being off the music radar for a long while.
“Before anyone ventures into any business, he or she has to make sure that proper arrangement is put in place, which I
have already done. This is one business I have done before, so I have taken my time and done my research. Right now, I can
say everything is on point and we are open to clients,” he stated.
On his decision to keep a low profile prior to this time, the artiste revealed that he is taking his time to do works that will remain ever green.
“My reason is that I’m taking my time to do what will last a lifetime. I don’t want to do something that after some years I will start regretting. Anything worth doing is worth doing well,” the ‘Mr President’ crooner said.
He also revealed the reason he has been going tough on Nigerian leaders in his songs. According to him, past administrations have not lived up to their bidding, “So, I needed to talk to them. That is because we all cannot keep quiet. They lie too much.”
He also noted that the reason he has not gone into Artiste Management like his other colleagues, is due to the fact that he is yet to see humble and good artistes to work with.
African China, known for his songs and how they relate with the situation of the country, received his first award at the Nigerian International Song Festival before releasing his debut album “Crisis” that later went on to win the Best Reggae/ Reggae dancehall at the Fanta Fame musical award 2003 merit award.

Video: Olamide Opens Up On Why Lil Kesh Left His YBNL Record Label

image
Award winning YBNL record label boss and music star, Olamide has remained quiet since the exit of one of his artist; Lil Kesh left the label to stand on his feet.
Since both artist parted ways, Lil Kesh has come out to clear the air saying despite floating my own record label, I am still very much with YBNL. He added that him and Olamide did not part ways because they had unresolved issues but because his contract with the record label expired and there was no need for renewal.
In an interview with TVC connect, Olamide opened up on Lil Kesh and what he has been up to in recent times saying: “I have been busy in the studio recording Adekunle Gold’s album, recording new songs for my new artist and also shooting videos for myself and Adekunle Gold.”
When asked about why he signs YBNL artists for just two years, Olamide said: “YBNL artists are not usually signed up for two years it depends on the deal we have but the deal I had with Lil Kesh and Victor was for two years.”
Speaking on Lil Kesh saying he is with YBNL, the music star revealed that: “Yes he is still with YBNL, we helped him set up his own record label, business and we will help him manage the business as well.”
However, just immediately after Lil Kesh’s exit from YBNL the record label boss immediately signed a new artist, Princess Temmie Ovwasa who was also described as the label’s first lady. The newly signed artist has already kicked off a media tour, where she opened on how she joined YBNL and how her parents have been very supportive of her music career.
