Banky W’s Grass to Grace Story – ” ‘I Begged to Sell CDs in US Salons to Survive’

Many see the glamour but are ignorant of the hard work and pains that preceded the fame of Nigeria’s rhythm and blues, R&B, superstar, Banky W. From an undergraduate begging for audience at salons in the United States, US, where his musical career started, 32-year-old Banky has built a musical empire that has produced internationally acclaimed artistes like Skales and Wizkid. Christened Olubankole Wellington, the Empire Mates Entertainment -EME- boss was born in the US to Nigerian parents who later relocated to Nigeria when he was five. It was after studying at the Home Science Association Secondary School, Lagos that he moved to New York to study industrial engineering on scholarship. With several albums to his credit, the manifold award-winner shares his story.

Starting small
His appearance bellies his personality and generally gives the illusion of a young man with a history devoid of sweat. But no, Banky did not only pay his due but also mastered certain principles which he wouldn’t forget in haste.
“One of such is to think big but start small”, he said.
“Everybody knows me to be the Chief Executive Officer, CEO, of EME, but what people do not know is that EME started when I was in my third year in university in New York. You see, we all dream dreams, but it is important to think very big and start where you are because God never gives you everything but gives you enough to start. At that time, I knew I wanted to do music, but of course I understood nobody starts by selling a million CDs or the big screen!”, Banky stated.

Menial jobs
Indeed his tale solidifies his emphasis on little beginning because to achieve his dream of becoming a music superstar, Banky had to take up to three jobs while also in university!
He said: “I worked in fast foods outlets, clothing stores and as a knife salesman, selling knives from door to door. That way, I gathered money to pay for studio recording time. I was recording with a close friend at that time.

Begging at saloons
“After making that music, we printed a thousand CDs though we didn’t have any fan. I had one battered car that broke down virtually everywhere, so, we would print black and white posters, stick them on the sides of the car, sell from the car’s trunk and drive to salons to do marketing. We would walk to the owners of the salons, greet politely, and ask them to let us entertain their customers. Sometimes, some would kick us out and sometimes some would say yes. If told yes, after singing for a minute or two, we would sell our CDs to the customers! That was the beginning!
“A lot of people see you on stage and see the success but do not know what you had to go through! I never had one really big break; it was always two steps forward and a couple backwards. But I just decided that I was going to make music work for me. That was why I moved on to a new salon each time any salon rejected me! I just kept going because I believe failure is when you give up. Albert Einstein said he tried a hundred times to make the light bulb. When he was asked what kept him going during the 99 times, he said: ‘I didn’t consider those 99 times as failure; rather, I considered them 99 ways that it didn’t work!’ We went about selling CDs and, on the days we couldn’t sell much, we would sit down and be broke together. I remember my friend was a member of a church that usually served food after service. So, on the days we didn’t sell CDs and were too broke to buy food, we would attend service in that church so we could pack rice and store in the fridge.

Work, school, music
“At a point, being a student of industrial engineering, I was working for an engineering company and was recording as well. I would go to work from 7am till about 2pm and then go to school till about 8pm, and then drive two and a half hours to New York City where the studio that would let us record for less was, and record until about 2am. I would then drive two and a half hours back home to be back at work at 7am the following day. One day, I was driving home from work and was so tired that I fell asleep while on a bridge. I would have driven off from the top of the bridge to God knows where, if not for an on-going construction work. God really saved me!”
After a while, Banky’s hard work began to pay off and, even while in school, he began winning awards, beginning with the ‘Albany Idol’ competition. Other international awards soon followed.

Returning to Nigeria
In 2008 when he decided to move to his home country Nigeria after the completion of one of his albums, Mr Capable, Banky was consistently told his genre of music ‘would never appeal to Nigerians and therefore wouldn’t ‘sell’. As he turned down pressure mounted on him and his manager to change their genre of music, Banky strongly held on to another long-standing principle which had taught him to stand out by being unique rather than trying to imitate anyone’s skill. He therefore insisted on sticking to R&B, and this paid-off as he soon became a household name in the Nigerian entertainment industry!

Lessons
He advised: “You cannot say enough about the grace of God and I therefore do not want to claim any form of glory. Falling down is inevitable but getting back up is optional! Frankly, you can’t appreciate sunshine if you’ve never been through a heavy rain. Yes, life is tough, but what do you do in those tough moments? Do you learn the lesson, stand up again, consider yourself stronger and keep going? Or do you sit down and feel sorry for yourself? The graveyard, they say, is the richest place in the world because therein lies so many who died with their dreams. So, my advice is, do not give up! If Banky can be where he is today, you can be where you want to be if you put to mind to it.”

Being Sexy Not About Big Backside — Mercy Johnson

Enjoy this interview with one of Nigerians super actress, Mercy Johnson...

BackgroundI am Mercy Johnson, an actress. I was born 29 years ago and I am the fourth child in a family of seven. My father is an ex-military officer and I left my mother at the age of two to live with him. Due to the nature of his job, he was constantly transferred from one station to another. I am proud of him because he taught me all I needed to know from childhood to adulthood.

Movie industry
I have grown with time and there have been good and bad times. There have been rumours and scandals. Sometimes, when I cry in movies, it wasn’t the script that made me cry. Rather, I reflect on my humble beginning and the height I’ve attained now. This makes me cry.

Journey into acting
After my secondary school education, I approached a friend for assistance to feature in a movie. He took me to the National Theatre, Lagos, but a role did not come until a year later. My first lead role was in a film titled, ‘The Maid.’ It was quite challenging to interprete because it was my first movie. When I saw the veterans on set, I fidgeted.

A star actress
Life is in phases and I cannot say I have reached the peak of my profession. I have not even won an Oscar yet! There is always a higher mountain to climb, a new vision to fulfill and I am at that point. I want to achieve new and greater dreams.

Fulfillment
The greatest fulfillment is the ability to influence people positively through my acting.

Challenges
Life is not a bed of roses; it comes with challenges which make me stronger and who I am.

Nollywood: Then and now
We have achieved feats which the old Nollywood did not achieve. It is all about progression and I am sure that in the future, Nollywood will achieve a greater feat than it is doing currently.

Relationship
My husband is loving and he is an understanding man. I am so happy to be married to him. I acted a movie, ‘Baby Oku in America’ when I was heavily pregnant and he didn’t feel bad about it. He understands that I am an actor and sometimes, we need real life situations, like the pregnancy, to interpret a role. Not many men would allow their wife do that.

Scandals
They are all lies. I just think the media needs to do their verification well before they put any story out. Whenever I read all manner of lies about me in the media, I wonder where all of these came from and regret being an actor. But in all, I move on and take it as one of the hazards of the job. I am fulfilled as an actor.

Mercy Johnson Foundation
I floated the foundation because of my love for the less privileged. One of my greatest joys is to see other people happy. I want to make lasting impact in my society. The objective is to identify the needs of the less privilege, evaluate them and help in our own little way. I strongly believe that as movie stars, we should live beyond the euphoria of stardom.

A sexy woman
It is inbuilt. It’s just how you feel about yourself. For me, being sexy is confidence. It mustn’t be about the hairstyle or the accessories or the big buttocks. It’s about you, liking yourself just the way you are.

Motherhood
My husband is a wonderful man. He makes my job easier and helps carry our daughter, Purity. He feeds her and she misses him whenever he is not around. As a family, we understand one another and we make whatever adjustments we have to make in order to have a good home.

Success
The challenges I faced have yielded results and I am reaping the fruits of all my efforts. I have grown from nobody in the industry to becoming a top actress from Africa. To God be all the glory.

To be an actress
Talent is never enough you must constantly brush up your talent but training can come in different form. You only need to ensure that in whatever form, you are not just relying on your inborn talent.

Projects
There are many but I’m not permitted to disclose them yet. They will start unfolding soon.

Fear
My worst fear will be to leave this earth without making a huge impact.

Fashion
I don’t wear what is in vogue or what everybody is wearing, I just wear what suits me and I’m lucky to have a physique that encourages everything I wear. My husband is a huge critic, so when he pays compliments to my dressing, I feel so good. He doesn’t believe that exposing anything makes you look better. He feels when you cover up, you look real nice.

To upcoming actors
Be yourself and let your talent speak for you. Don’t come into the industry because you want to be famous, but because you love the art of acting. Then try to appreciate those who were there before you.

8 Mistakes Men Make When Approaching Women

This update is coming from the love tip department...
Think you know all there is to know about picking up women?
You will be surprised at these 8 mistakes most men make when trying to approach a woman they like.

1. Starting Out On The Defensive
Ironically, the mistake a lot of men make when it comes to approaching women simply fearing the worst. This isn’t always true (at all), but once you start believing it is you’ll immediately be on the backfoot, trying to think of solutions to problems that really, haven’t even arisen. The last thing you want to do is see any woman as a ‘challenge’ or as though you need to learn any ‘tricks‘ to persuade potential partners to talk to you. Doing this will be what puts women off, not the things you were initially worried about. Forget what you’ve heard, approaching a woman is not about game-playing. Women will always rather get to know a friendly guy who means what he says than someone who’s trying to play it cool.

2. Wrong Place:
Everywhere you go is not a pick up zone -- you have to thoughtfully work out where you can actually approach women you don’t know. There is no point striking up conversation with a potential partner if they are already in a situation where they don’t feel like flirting: you’re dooming yourself to failure. For instance, t’s a safe bet to stick to bars, when women are more often than not feeling their best and already in the mood for socialising and open to getting to know people. The buzzy atmosphere of a bar also means that you can casually make conversation with less fear of rejection. Pick the right place where you know she isn't feeling stressed out or busy.

3. Not Being sensitive to the situation:
Sometimes, women just want to go out drinking and dancing. So seeing girl out having a good time does not necessarily mean they want to be approached by men. Be prepared that chances are that most people won’t be that interested in hanging out with strangers when they’re out to have a laugh with their mates. And if you get the vibe that you’ve interrupted a night that you’re not welcome on (if she’s not continuing the conversation, if she’s more interested in her friends) then just amicably excuse yourself to the bar and carry on with your night.
4. Being too drunk:
Being with a man who is in control is important to women. Women don't want to be with a guy we have to force feed water during a night out, help go to the loo or keep from getting into fights at the bar. You're also way more to get distracted from the woman you're trying to talk to by other women, slur your words and just be generally unapologetic and annoying. Until you're well into a relationship, avoid getting too drunk.

5.Using Pick-up Lines:
Sorry, guys, but everything you've learned about using pickup lines to start a conversation with women is dead wrong. There is nothing cheesier, less interesting or more of a turnoff than a guy who uses a standard opening line. Why? It shows he lacks confidence, period. It shows he's literally spent time reading up on the best way to approach a woman and that he needs other guys to tell him what to say and how to act. Whatever you do, a simple hello is better than a bad line.

6. Not Asking Direct Questions
The worst thing a guy can do is come up to us and talk about himself for the entirety of the conversation. If you have to talk about how amazing you are, it's probably because you're not. Asking questions about her life shows you're a considerate guy, and there's more of a chance we'll feel a connection -- which will make it much easier to get a date.

7. Being Too Touchy
As a general rule -- whether its approaching a woman you don’t yet know, or progressing things further once you make it to the bedroom, just echo the movements she makes towards you. Wait for her to make the move to make contact with you, and then do that too. Build up to different parts of the body, but do it following this routine. But regardless, don’t do this in the supermarket because although you might be getting good vibes from your partner in crime, you will creep out the other shoppers.

8. Concentrating Too Much On Her, Not You
Often, a guy will concentrate too much on what a woman's reaction to him is rather than on the conversation taking place. If you're overthinking what you're supposed to say and where your hands are supposed to be (in your pockets? By your sides?), she'll know. And it will get awkward. If anything, try thinking of approaching a woman as starting a conversation with a good friend -- be casual about it, be a good listener and let her talk. Another way to think about it: If it works out you'll gain a date. If it doesn't, what are you really losing?

Rihanna & Chris Brown: Getting BackTogether After Breaking up with Karrueche

With Chris and Karrueche having a blow-out fight and breaking up, the door is open once again for Rihanna to reunite with her ex. Will she jump at the chance? Rihanna and Chris Brown break up from time to time, but it never really seems like they’re actuallyover.

And after Chris split from Karrueche Tranon Oct. 21, it seems possible that RiRi and Chris could come together once again.

However, a source close to the Unapologetic singer tells HollywoodLife.comexclusively that this time is different. Rihanna & Chris Brown: Will They Start Dating Again? “Not in this lifetime,” the source says about a Rihanna-Chris reunion. “Not in the next lifetime.” The source suggests that the couple’s last breakup in May 2013 was so bad and rough on Rihanna that it finally made her realize that she can’t have a lasting relationship with Chris. “He taught her what not to look for in a guy,” the source adds. “And for that she’s thankful.”

What Rihanna wants most is to just be left out of all the romantic chaos: “She’s just glad it ain’t her and that she doesn’t have to put up with the drama.” What a turnaround for Rihanna. She and Chris were always on-off, and she was always giving him second chances no matter how bad he messed up (and he messed up pretty bad).

Apparently she finally had enough. Which, no matter how sad, is probably a good thing for the both of them. They failed to make it work so many times — finally one of them took the hint. Chris and Karrueche may not even be 100 percent over. “Karrueche thinks it’s one big misunderstanding and loves him and she’s sure that they’ll be back on good terms once all this drama boils over.
