Champions League: Ronaldo responds to Messi’s brilliance, Man City cruises to 4-0 win

Cristiano Ronaldo was straight back in the goalscoring groove as Real Madrid began the defence of their Champions League trophy with a 3-0 victory over APOEL Nicosia.

Ronaldo is currently serving a domestic ban for pushing the referee after being sent off in the Spanish Supercopa clash with Barcelona last month, and he matched Lionel Messi's tally the previous night as Zinedine Zidane's side secured a comfortable win at the Bernabeu.

His goals took his Champions League career goals tally to 107 - and Sergio Ramos added an overhead kick as the Cypriots were swatted aside at the Bernabeu.

Also, John Stones scored twice, as Manchester City built a big lead and essentially walked to a 4-0 win at Feyenoord on Wednesday in UEFA Champions League play.

Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus also scored for City.

Man City’s next UCL match is a home test from Shakhtar Donetsk on Sept. 26, and Feyenoord will have to find a way to get something from Napoli on the same date.

Group G saw FC Porto suffer a shock 3-1 defeat at the hands of Besiktas at home while last season’s semi-finalist Monaco shared the spoils 1-1 with newcomers RB Leipzig.

Shakhtar Donetsk took full advantage of home court to record a winning start, beating SSC Napoli 2-1 and Maribor drew 1-1 with Spartak Moscow.
